The Over-the-Counter Shampoo Phase: What I Tried Before My Scalp Psoriasis Diagnosis
When I first started experiencing what I thought was dandruff, I did what most people would probably do.
I headed to the store.
At the time, I had no idea that I was dealing with scalp psoriasis. I simply assumed I had a stubborn case of dandruff that needed the right shampoo.
So began what I now think of as my over-the-counter shampoo phase.
Like many people searching for relief, I tried several of the most popular dandruff shampoos available, including Selsun Blue, Head & Shoulders, and Neutrogena T/Sal Therapeutic Shampoo.
Each product promised relief from flakes, itching, and scalp irritation. And each time I bought a new bottle, I felt hopeful that maybe this would finally be the one that worked.
What I didn't realize at the time was that finding the right solution wasn't going to happen overnight.
Using these products requires patience.
You have to give them time to work. You need to follow the directions consistently and wait to see whether your symptoms improve. Even if you notice some improvement, it can take weeks or even months to determine whether the results will last.
If the shampoo doesn't work, you move on to the next one and start the process all over again.
Looking back, this trial-and-error period lasted much longer than I expected.
Some products seemed to help temporarily. Others made little difference at all.
But there was one thing that almost all of them had in common.
The smell.
Many dandruff shampoos contain active ingredients such as selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, coal tar, or salicylic acid. While these ingredients are designed to help reduce flaking, inflammation, and buildup on the scalp, they often have a strong medicinal scent.
For me, that smell was one of the hardest parts of the entire experience.
No matter how well I rinsed my hair, I felt like I could still smell the shampoo long after I got out of the shower. It wasn't the fresh, clean feeling I was used to from my regular hair care products.
Instead, it felt like a constant reminder that something wasn't right with my scalp.
As frustrating as that period was, I'm grateful I went through it because it taught me an important lesson.
Not every scalp condition is dandruff.
After spending a significant amount of time trying different over-the-counter treatments without finding a lasting solution, I finally decided it was time to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist.
That appointment changed everything.
After examining my scalp, my dermatologist explained that what I thought was dandruff was actually scalp psoriasis.
Suddenly, years of frustration started to make sense.
The flaking, irritation, itching, and recurring symptoms weren't simply caused by a dry scalp or dandruff. There was an underlying condition that required a different approach to treatment.
Receiving the diagnosis was both surprising and relieving.
For the first time, I had an answer.
As I continue sharing my scalp psoriasis and hair care journey, I'll also be sharing products, treatments, and resources that I've discovered along the way.
You can follow me on Pinterest, where I regularly share hair care favorites, scalp care products, beauty finds, and other recommendations that have caught my attention throughout my journey.
I've also created a Resources page here on my website where you'll find products that I personally use and recommend, along with products that have been highly recommended by my family and close friends. My goal is to make it easier for you to find trusted products without spending countless hours researching on your own.
Whether you're dealing with scalp psoriasis, hair thinning, or simply looking for products that may be worth trying, I hope these resources help make your journey a little easier.
In my next blog post, I'll share the prescription medications and treatments my dermatologist recommended, what worked, what didn't, and the lessons I've learned from years of managing scalp psoriasis.
If you're currently cycling through shampoo after shampoo and wondering why nothing seems to provide lasting relief, know that you're not alone.
Sometimes the answer isn't in another bottle.
Sometimes it's finding out what's really going on beneath the surface.
